Creativity Exercise #5: Shaky hand
Day 5! I hope you’re enjoying these doodles! I’ve got one more for you today.
I want you to write the following poem out with your non-dominant hand. It will be shaky and frustrating. Do it anyway. What comes up for you with this? My hand hurt like hell and the child-like writing that came out of it made me sympathize with little hands learning to write for the first time. It also made me read this poem slowly and in pieces as I labored over each word.
Praying
by Mary Oliver
It doesn't have to be
the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few
small stones; just
pay attention, then patch
a few words together and don't try
to make them elaborate, this isn't
a contest but the doorway
into thanks, and a silence in which
another voice may speak.
